As parents, we want our children to be successful. But what is success and how should we define it for our kids? The goal to train up a child should be to have both knowledge and truth to live in their gifts and find their destiny. These questions will help you begin a conversation with your children to help them succeed.

How would you define success?

This question will have many answers. Let them think about it for a bit. At some point in their lives your children will need to discover the answer for themselves. Let them begin to articulate the answer and get their own clarity regarding success and what it means to them.

Are their absolute truths that help us become successful?

The other question could be, is everything subjective. In other words, is truth however you decide or perceive it or are there foundations of truth that everything else is built on? For example, is honesty a foundation of truth that will result in success?

A follow up question to help encourage your children to think might be: Does success take training, hard work and persistence? Very few people have become successful with out a failure or two or a hundred. Many would tell you they worked very hard for their success. Encourage your children to dream and believe in their successes but know it will take some hard work.

Reflect

Each of your children were created very differently and for a unique purpose. Help them know that the values you believe in are the truths that become the foundations of their success. Then encourage them to find their individual paths of success. Having a foundation of truth and living out their destiny is where they will find great peace and joy in their life.
