Become a Volunteer and Change your Life and the World

There are many benefits of becoming a volunteer.  Most of the benefits or the blessings that come from volunteering are not just for the ones you have helped or what you may have changed.  As it turns out, the one who reaches out and volunteers get blessed so much more than the one who was helped.

We have always told our kids that there is a transaction when you give of your time talents and treasures.  Yes, you are a part of blessing someone who may be in need and you gave something that helped him or her.  What you receive in this transaction is joy that changes your own heart and possibly your life.  Talking to your kids about volunteering and why it matters may help them feel good about something they do to help another person or something they changed for the better.

Question 1

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Allow your children ample time to answer, if they need help offer the following suggestions and if they agree ask them why:

  • Being a part of making something better in your community
  • Meeting new people
  • Learning new skills
  • Encouraging others
  • Sharing your story
  • Sharing your faith
  • Makes your heart feel good
  • Can help identify your strengths and weaknesses
  • Gives confidence
  • New experiences
  • Can even help you make future career and education decisions

Where do you think you could make a difference?

Your kids may already see a need and want to help.  Listen to their hearts about where they want to give of their time and encourage them. Volunteering can help your children find their passion.

As a family, where could we all make a difference?

One of the things we have encouraged families to do is to serve together.  When our kids watch their parents give and serve they feel good about their family.  In addition, they learn about themselves as you involve them in activities that they may have never experienced without your involvement.  You can start out by identifying where you can volunteer locally and then take a bold trip overseas and help an orphanage or a school.

If you want to change your own life and receive a blessing, then become a volunteer and give.  Many have begun by simply volunteering and have ultimately made an amazing difference in the world.  You and your family can make a difference.  C2 it and receive the blessing.
