Better than Resolutions

Every year millions of people make New Year’s resolutions. According to Google, resolution means a firm decision to do or not to do something. What is better than a resolution? –Actually being intentional about doing or not doing something! Ultimately, a decision does not change anything; it is the carrying out of that decision that makes the difference. As the year comes to a close use these questions to start the conversation about how to make your family better in the next year and then be intentional to follow through and encourage your children to do the same.

Your children know nonsense when they see it. They also understand and sense authenticity. They may have seen resolutions made in the past that never were followed through. If that is the case for your family, use this time to “reset” and commit to only making decisions that you are willing to carry out.

What are some resolutions we can make as a family AND make a realistic plan to fulfill?

Listen to their hearts as they respond. Do not respond too quickly, even if there is a full minute of silence before they speak. Let them truly consider their answer and no matter what it is thank them for being honest. Then, ask them to be involved in implementing a plan to fulfill the resolutions they recommend.

Families are meant to help one another so making resolutions together then taking a team approach to realizing them will ultimately make your family better communicators, team players, and even empathetic toward each other’s life goals. Help them to be realistic because the whole point in making a resolution is to actually carry it out.

Reflect

There is nothing wrong with making New Year resolutions. However, it is even better if you can help one another keep them this year. As you finish the discussion evaluate the practicality of each decision and the objectives to attain them. C2 it and be blessed.
